Atzo Nicolaï (1960) is a Dutch manager of DSM and former politician who is a member of the VVD. After acquiring his gymnasium-B diploma in Rotterdam in 1980, he studied law and political science at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. After finishing both educations in 1987, he worked, among others, for the Dutch Welfare department, the Council for the Arts and the Council for Culture. In 1997/1998 he was also part-time project leader for the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. In 1998 he became a member of the House of Commons on behalf of the VVD. During this period he was part of, among others, the board of the Boekman Foundation and a member of the Rushdie Committee. In 2002 he was re-elected, and became the State Secretary for European Affairs in the Cabinet-Balkenende I. In 2003 he was re-elected again, and returned to the position of State Secretary of European Affairs. He remained in this function until 2006, when he became Minister for Government Reform and Kingdom Relations.
From 2006 until 2010 he also was the VVD-spokesman for culture, child care, labor and care, air traffic and fraud control in the social security in the House of Commons. From 2010 onwards, he was the spokesman for foreign affairs for his parliamentary party and he occupied himself with issues such as international military missions.
As of the 1st of June 2011, Nicolaï became the director of DSM Netherlands.
