Ton Elias is a Dutch politician and a former journalist. Since 2008 he is a member of the House of Representatives on behalf of the ‘Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie' (VVD).Elias started his career as a political journalist of ‘Den Haag Vandaag' and RTL4. However, after some disagreements with his colleagues he gave up on journalism. Furthermore, after successful functioning as chief of communication at insurance company Aegon, Elias founded his own two public relations companies: ‘Elias Advies' and ‘Elias Communicatie'. He became responsible for several campaigns of the government to increase political awareness among the Dutch population. In 2006 he decided to make himself eligible on behalf of the VVD during the House of Representatives elections. In 2008 he actually made it into the House of Representatives and from then on he became the spokesman for educational policies. Next to that, Elias also works on the organization of the House of Representatives. Ton Elias was our prominent guest on the 18th of April. We interviewed him on diverse topics, such as the role of the media in politics and cutbacks on education. Especially the topic of education and the future plans to fine students with a study delay provoked some discussion. Students were interactively involved and posed questions. Although many didn't agree with Ton Elias, the interview was successful. |
