Ministry of Economic AffairsThe Ministry of Economic Affairs, and in particular its Directorate-General for Foreign Economic Relations, wants to engage in active dialogue with business, economists and society at large how to best assist Dutch companies with their internationalization strategies. Exports are important to the Dutch economy, contributing for 1/3 to our GDP. The Netherlands is the 5th largest investor of FDI abroad. Dutch companies' international activities increase economic growth and welfare, enhance innovation and create employment.
In this case exercise the main question to be addressed is how different forms of capital can contribute to internationalization. The current crisis has revealed a need for firms and individuals to better assess risks associated with financial capital. This has implications also for firms' internalization strategies. Another main trend to be discussed is the growing importance of emerging market economies which requires an assessment of Dutch businesses' competiveness in these markets, among others based on capital endowments. Different answers to these broad questions will lead the way for policy-makers with Economic Affairs to decide on their various options to stimulate international enterprise: through market knowledge, export and investment subsidies and economic diplomacy tools which are used during trade missions and by Dutch embassy staff abroad.
